Straties for Gaps in Notes
It is not uncommon for students to miss information while taking notes during a lecture. It is important for students to fill in the gaps when reviewing their notes.
This page suggests strategies to help fill in gaps from notes taken during a lecture. This strategy can be used if you are using a digital recorder during class and reviewing the recording after class or if you are simply reviewing notes after class.
Gaps in Written Notes
The following strategy may help if you are hand writing notes during the class lecture.
- Create a separate Gaps In Notes page.
- Work through your notes topic-by-topic.
- Identify the first gap in your notes.
- Add a reference within the hand written information indicating the topic and gap number (e.g., A-1).
- Add the same reference to the Gaps In Notes page (e.g., A-1).
- Add the missing information just after the topic and gap reference.
Gaps in Typed Notes
The following strategy may help if you are typing notes during the class lecture and need to fill in gaps later.
- Work through your notes topic-by-topic.
- Identify the first gap in your notes.
- Add missing information in a different color font.
